Collating Evidence of Good Practices for Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation in Hong Kong: A Mixed-Method Study

This project aims at (i) identifying and reviewing the evidence reported by local drug treatment and rehabilitation projects from different sources (e.g. BDF, existing databases and registers, and empirical studies conducted by local social service providers); (ii) classifying drug treatment and rehabilitation projects into different types, identifying core intervention components and combinations of components, and examining the effectiveness of different intervention types and combinations of components; and (iii) collating good practices into the guidelines for a generic intervention model for local service providers.
Short and Long Term Burden of COVID-19 in Substance Abusers: A Cohort Study

This project aims at (i) investigating the risk of COVID-19 infection in substance abusers; (ii) evaluating the short-term burden of COVID-19 in substance abusers; (iii) assessing the long-term burden of COVID-19 in substance abusers; and (iv) comparing vaccine effectiveness among vaccinated individuals with or without substance abuse.
Predictors of Drug Abuse and Relapse among Ethnic Minorities in Hong Kong: A Prospective Longitudinal Study

This project aims at (i) identifying trends, patterns, and characteristics of ethnic minority drug abusers, with particular emphasis on potential generational differences regarding the frequency, types, patterns of drug abuse, and reasons for using drugs between young and older ethnic minorities; (ii) examining demographic, psychological, and structural predictors of drug abuse and relapse in a 12-month interval among drug abusers who are ethnic minorities; and (iii) examining awareness, perceived facilitators, and obstacles of utilising substance abuse rehabilitation services among drug-abusing ethnic minorities and learning their service needs.
Harm of Cannabis and Cannabinoids Use: A Retrospective Study and A Literature Review

This project aims at (i) examining the risk of major physical diseases (e.g., lung cancer, stroke, ischemic heart disease), self-harm and mortality in patients with cannabis use disorder through a retrospective study of 600 local patients with cannabis use disorder; and (ii) identifying the risk factors, frequency, symptoms, pathological mechanisms and treatment of Synthetic Cannabinoid (SC)-related psychiatric disorders (i.e. SC use disorder, psychosis, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders) through a systematic literature review.

Project elements include nano-movie production workshops and nano-movie competition for secondary and tertiary students, anti-drug training workshops and anti-drug day for secondary students, tertiary students and ethnic minority youths, public showcase and roving exhibitions of shortlisted and award winning nano-movies, nano-movie competition award presentation ceremony, anti-drug activities in 18 districts for general public.

This project aims at enhancing the awareness of young people on the harm of drugs, especially on cannabis, and strengthening young people’s positive attitude towards life. Project elements include sharing on the harm of cannabis by anti-drug experts, visit to drug treatment services and sharing by ex-drug abusers, a cappella and drama training for secondary students, tertiary students and high risk youths, public performance of a cappella with sharing of anti-drug messages in schools, youth centres and public venue and broadcasting of performance video clips on social media and mass media.

This project aims at enhancing self-esteem and resilience of high-risk youths through various interest classes and pre-vocational training. Project elements include health talks for high risk youths, general interest classes training for young “freeters” and tertiary students with mild emotional distress and creative art training for high risk youths.
